The Department of JournalismJournalism at City University London has been offering postgraduate courses in journalism since 1976. Its record on getting graduates into the best jobs in journalism and broadcasting is exemplary, and the industry focus is intense. It's 4,000 graduates form one of the strongest and most influential alumni networks in the media, both in the UK and internationally. The teachers are drawn from among Britain's leading journalists. Professor Stewart Purvis, former CEO of ITN, is Chair of Broadcast Journalism. Media commentator and former Fleet Street editor Professor Roy Greenslade is Chair of Journalism. Professor David Leigh of The Guardian is the Anthony Sampson Chair of Reporting. Professional input is unparalleled and includes the expert opinions of ITN’s chief lawyer John Battle and Channel 4's former chief of news and current affairs David Lloyd of the Financial Times. City University London is advancing the study and practice of investigative journalism – it is host to the Centre for Investigative Journalism and is due to launch an Investigative Journalism MA pathway in September 2008. The renowned Postgraduate Diplomas in Broadcast Journalism, Newspaper Journalism, Magazine Journalism and Television Current Affairs Journalism are all now offered as Master's qualifications alongside the MA in Publishing Studies. Creative Writing provision is expanding, with a new pathway in Non-fiction launched in 2008, drawing together our strengths in research, writing and reportage. In addition, an MA in Political Campaigning and Reporting continues City's expansion of practice based education into related professional areas.
The department has one of the highest graduate employment rates in the country. The Graduate School of Journalism is housed in new £12 million facilities, reinforcing the University's position as Europe's leading provider of journalism education. The new facilities were developed in consultation with leading industry contacts, and include a television and video programming studio, four radio studios, four audio-visual newsrooms, and four digital newsrooms.
