City University, LondonCity University was granted a royal charter in 1966, based on its reputation
as a centre for professional education dating back to 1894. Founded to
provide technical education for the science-based crafts and trades of
Clerkenwell and Islington, the university has expanded into areas such
as management and finance, informatics, health and social sciences, journalism
and the performing arts. The university has built up close links with
the local community. City University is cosmopolitan (153 nationalities
on campus) so international students fit in easily and feel welcome
straight away. The university is in the heart of the capital, a short
bus ride from the financial centre, the City, and the entertainments
of the West End. As a student at City University you will enjoy all the benefits of being

The Department of JournalismSince its first one-year postgraduate journalism course was offered in 1976, City University Department of Journalism has become the premier journalism school in Britain. The department has close links with the media: national and regional newspapers, news agencies, periodicals, radio and television. Professional journalists, including editors of many major national newspapers, magazines and broadcasters regularly visit the department as guest speakers, specialist lecturers, workshop leaders and external examiners. Many of the links with the industry have been forged though its network of alumni: more than 3,000 former students are now in responsible media positions throughout Britain and the world. There are 500 undergraduate and postgraduate students. The department runs two undergraduate degree courses, in Journalism and a Social Science, and jointly with Queen Mary College, London University, Journalism and Contemporary History. At postgraduate level students work for MA degrees in international journalism, electronic publishing, creative writing, and publishing and for diplomas in newspaper, broadcast and periodical journalism, and social science. The department has one of the highest graduate employment rates in the country. It runs professional development short courses for major institutions such as the British Council and the Confederation of British Industry. Recent special courses have included one for the Russian edition of Vogue and several for the Financial Times. City is a founder member of the European Journalism Training Association (EJTA) and is one of seven schools in the Gutenburg network. The department has three print production newsrooms, fully equipped with networked PCs and Macs running QuarkXpress, Adobe Photoshop, InDesign etc and Dreamweaver. The Mac newsroom is equipped with Adobe Premiere digital video editing and the department has a radio newsroom featuring Burli newsroom system, Adobe Audition and DAVE-2000 editing software. The department has an all-digital radio studio, a second studio for self-operated production, a small self-operated ISDN suite and the use of a two-camera audio-visual studio.
