Admissions Process

The Consortium aims to admit highly-qualified graduate students from a wide range of countries. The admission process for students is highly selective and is based upon a variety of factors. Applicants will normally only be admitted if they have a Bachelors degree or equivalent (a minimum of an above-average class mark is expected) and the equivalent of at least three months full-time work as a journalist. As all courses are taught in English we also require high language proficiency.

Your application for admission to the Erasmus Mundus Masters will only be processed once we have received all required documents.

During the admission process, all applications are read by three independent persons and graded in each of the categories below:

  • Academic background | The applicant’s academic ability, previous academic record and academic references.
  • Journalism experience | Based on the applicant’s examples of journalistic work and references.
  • Motivation | Based on the applicant’s personal statement.
  • Life experience | eg. language ability, international experience, cultural awareness, organisational skills etc.
  • Language | In addition, applicants are expected to have a minimum IELTS score of 7.0.
IMPORTANT!

The application package you send off must contain two identical applications, each in their own folder, and with the documents in this order:
  1. The application form (including the letter of motivation)
  2. Letters of recommendation
  3. Educational background documents (university graduation
  4. certificate and university transcripts)
  5. English proficiency test (if required)
  6. Curriculum Vitae
  7. Proof of work as a professional journalist
  8. Samples of journalistic products
For a detailed description of each part of the application package, see below.

Other important information:
  • Your application form MUST be filled out electronically, not by hand
  • Make sure that you include your correct e-mail address
  • Follow all instructions carefully to ensure your application is correct and complete

Required documents

1. Application Form
To apply for the Erasmus Mundus Master's programme you will have to submit two hard copy applications together with two copies of all the required documents (please see below). Every applicant is required to complete the application form. Please note: In the electronic application form section 9 you should provide us with a max. 2 pages letter of motivation stating your reasons for undertaking graduate work, as well as an explanation of your academic interests, including their relation to your undergraduate study, life and professional goals. The application must be submitted in printed format to the University of Aarhus by regular/express mail, along with all other required admissions documents (listed below). The University of Aarhus WILL ONLY START OFFICIALLY PROCESSING YOUR APPLICATION FOR ADMISSION ONCE WE HAVE ALL THE REQUIRED ADMISSIONS DOCUMENTS.

You MUST submit 2 copies of your application form.

2. Letters of Recommendation
We require a minimum of two letters of recommendation. Preferably you should submit an academic reference, ie. from a university official (eg. dean, former professor, department head or faculty advisor) acquainted with your work, and one professional reference from a former employer. See the application form for further details and sample letters.
--> Download the sample letters for academic recommendation and
--> Professional recommendation

You MUST submit 2 copies of both letters of recommendation.

3. Educational background documents: University Graduation Certificate and University Transcripts
Completed and official graduation certificates and transcripts of all previous college or university studies must be submitted. All transcripts or academic records must be official documents provided in the original language. If that language is not English, they must also be accompanied by certified translations.

Applicants who are currently finishing a degree and haven’t yet received an official university graduation certificate are required to submit an official transcript for all semesters completed to present. Such students must also provide the University of Aarhus with an official statement from their current university stating the expected date of graduation and degree to be awarded.

Please understand that applicants accept the responsibility to ensure that Aarhus University receives all educational credentials to complete their file. The volume of applications received makes it impossible to contact universities or persons listed as references to request missing transcripts or letters of recommendation.

You MUST submit 2 copies of your transcripts.

4. English proficiency test
Applicants whose native language is not English must provide original test scores for the IELTS (academic) English language test. Minimum score required is 7.0. See the IELTS website at http://www.ielts.org for details of test centres. No other proficiency tests (such as TOEFL) are accepted. You can apply for the program without your IELTS results: see this FAQ for more info.

Applicants who have studied for one or more years in, or received a degree from, a college or university in an English-speaking country do not need to present an English language test. This education however must have taken place within two years prior to submission of the graduate application. In this case, an official certificate from the applicant's school/university is required to confirm that the medium of instruction is English. No other countries are exempted.

You MUST submit 2 copies of your IELTS certificate.

5. Curriculum Vitae
Please provide us with a summary (max 2 pages) of your educational and professional work experience, listing any special achievements or qualifications, and/or possible publications.

You MUST submit 2 copies of your CV.

6. Proof of work as a professional journalist
You must show that you have the equivalence of at least three months' full-time work as a professional journalist. In this context professional means being part of an editorial team of a mass medium. Experiences in public relations or marketing are not accepted as a substitute. In order to provide proof of your work as a professional journalist a current or previous employer needs to supply a signed document that states the employment period. This is in addition to the letters of recommendation / references and the samples of published journalistic products.

You MUST submit 2 copies of this document.

7. Samples of published journalistic products

Please submit three articles or other samples (TV, radio, web) of your journalistic work, preferably in English. Do not submit more than three articles or equivalent. If your samples are not in English, please include a short English summary.

You MUST submit 2 copies of your work samples.

ONLY UPON RECEIPT OF A COMPLETED APPLICATION WILL THE OFFICIAL PROCESSING FOR ADMISSIONS BEGIN.
When we have received a completed application, we will confirm receipt by email. PLEASE SEND ALL DOCUMENTS TO US IN A SINGLE PACKAGE, NOT SEPARATELY.
We look forward to receiving your application for admission to the Erasmus Mundus Masters “Journalism and Media within Globalisation: The European Perspective”.
